Massage has been used as a natural means of relieving pain since ancient times. It is a non-invasive technique, which directly affects muscles and circulatory system. It also has the psychological benefit of creating a feeling of wellbeing.
Massage techniques
Relaxation massage is non-specific, light massage aimed at relaxing the body and calming themind. It is slow, gentle and rhythmic.
Therapeutic massage is a deeper massage, which focuses on specific muscle or group of muscles in order to relieve pain. The tight and painful muscle(s) is eased. This is achieved by massage, trigger point work and stretching. Trigger point work focuses on relieving tight spots in the muscle by the application of direct pressure. Muscle stretching helps maintain the length of the muscle.
Therapeutic massage improves circulation and therefore the blood supply to affected area. This form of massage is often used to compliment medical and physiotherapy treatment. It is particularly useful in the treatment of upper and lower back pain and for the relief of headaches.
